Packing my carryon!?

So im going to florida soon. I was reading the site for the plan were flying on and it says u can bring one carryon bag and 1 personal item such as brief case purse or laptop. i WILL need my purse and i want to bring my laptop, but i need my carry on for blanket, ipod, books, sudoku etc. so my question is can i bring my purse and then a carryon WITH my laptop IN IT?? im using a hollister tote, and my laptop fits in it. so would this be ok or would they count it as 3 items; laptop, carry on, and purse??

I frequently travel with laptop bag, carry-on and a purse. The only place that I've had the purse be counted as a "third" item was through Heathrow! When this happens, I shove my purse in my carryon.

In order to save carrying so much stuff through airports (always a drag!) is that I now have a backpack laptop bag which is fairly roomy. I can fit in my laptop, magazines, the small amount of toiletries that you are allowed, some snacks and books. It's much more convenient and no one has ever counted this as "TWO" items!
