What should a 1st yr teacher bring with him or her on the first day of class?
My husband was just hired to be a business ed teacher at a local high school and school starts in a week. We weren't sure what all he would need to have with him and want to be prepared. Of course we know the basics, a syllabus, planner, calender, pens and pencils, and laptop. Any suggestions?
I would advise him to get his unit plans and long term plans in order. Principals like teachers that are organized from day one and know where they plan to be in 6 months time. He can make alterations to the plans as he goes, but having them will help him make a good impression.
He should know what assignments he plans to run for the first few weeks at least. Have these copied and ready to go, and have back-up plans just in case something bombs. Always copy more than you need - kids lose things regularly.
Know what textbook you will use. Make sure the school has the textbooks ready and available. Don't expect the school to buy a new set of books, so use what they have. Get the teacher's resource, and get to know the book and the material.
Get a copy of the curriculum for the course (I don't know what district you are in, but I am assuming there is a goverment-made program of studies). Try to reference this as much as possible in the unit plans.
Try to gather grading schemes for assignments before you hand them out to students. Use rubrics most of all, and hand a copy to each student with their assignments so they know what you expect.
I will edit this if I think of any more - My classes start in 2 and a half weeks, and I teach high school as well.
I see someone above me mentioned rules and consequences - that is very important. He needs to know what he expects from students, and what consequences he will apply if need be. These should be in line with the school's rules and discipline policy. He should also talk to other teachers that use classrooms in his area of the school - it is valuable to work out which classrooms you can send misbehaving students to when they are too disruptive. Always send the 11 and 12th graders to the 10th grade classes, and the 10th graders to the 11 or 12 grade classes. They HATE that, and it will make your life so much easier.
Also, be consistent with your rules. Enforce them ALWAYS, and apply consequences EVERY time they are broken (this can be a stern "look," moving them to another desk, time after class, movement to another room, sent to the office - make sure the consequences are logical and appropriate to the rule being broken). If you forget to enforce a rule, students will quickly decide that you don't care about that rule, and they will make your life more difficult because they will assume that they can break it because you won't enforce it.
