What is the difference between a Intel Dual-Core and a Pentium 4 processor?
What are the differences between the Intel Dual-Core and a Pentium 4 processor? Which one would you consider inferior to the other one and why?
The dual core (Core 2) line is the successor to the Pentium 4 line. Dual cores are superior in many (most) ways.
For instance, the new core 2 chips run on a 65 nanometer (nm) architecture, which basically means they are faster than an equally clocked Pentium 4 chip at 90 nm, and they produce less heat. Less heat is a good thing.
The reason for dual cores came about mostly because as processors increase in clock speed or frequency ( 1 GHz, 2 GHz, etc) they also increase nearly linearly in heat output. Because heat kills components, it was becoming less and less efficient to create faster processors.
Therefore, the logical switch was to move to multiple cores, and this is what we will see in the future (dual core, quad core, etc).
One advantage of P4 over dual core is that most current games only support one CPU thread, so in other words your dual core would only be working with one core on a game (half it's potential), while the P4 would be utilizing it's whole potential.
However, the P4 is a dying breed. Most of the new dual cores are plenty fast enough to handle todays games and the games of tomorrow will support multiple cores anyway.
Definitely go with the Core 2 over the Pentium.
