i have a old clamshell ibook how can i get wireless without buying a modem

If it doesn't need to be portable, get a Wireless ethernet bridge. This way it will work regardless of the OS or device. This is also for 802.11 home and public networks or WiFi hotspots, not WiMAX or 3G.
