Net book or Notebook? Which is better for road trips?
We are retired, and I have been working with computers for 20+ years as a secretary in a university. We wish to purchase a laptop or notebook to carry with us on the road. We read advertisements for net books, notebooks, laptops. We need it for maps, to look up lodging, and email on the road. Thanks for any help you can give us.
We 1/2 time and full-time RVed for a few years after we retired. Living in Valley of the Sun now, but still have the 5th wheel & truck. Taking another couple month trip starting May. If you are talking real retirement dream road trips, get a good notebook and an air card from Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint. Cricket Broadband doesnt require a contract. But, I know little about it, including how good it's coverage areas are. Have Microsoft Streets & Trips and Google Earth on your laptop. Very informative site if you will be RVing: http://www.trailerlifedirectory.com/ and interesting even if not.. A book called The Next Exit is a great tool that tells you the fuel, food, motels, etc that can be found at the next exit. Most motels/hotels have free wifi if you do not plan on using the net other than in your motel. This would eliminate the need for an air card. We dropped our home DSL & land line since we both have cells (and on road so much). So cost of the air card same as old expense of base land and DSL.
An air card will allow you to make your motel or RV resort reservations in route if you decide you don't want to travel the same distance you thought when you started the day. It allows you web access from rest stops, motel room, RV resort, or while rolling down the highway for important matters or to play on forums etc..
Going to a class today, or little trips of a week or two, a netbook would do the trick. For a long haul dream road trip, a netbook may nott have as large of a HD as you might want, a DVD player, and other features you might want. You probably would have to take along at least an external DVD player/recorder, maybe an external HD, etc.
