How to recover pictures from the hard drive of a broken laptop?
My laptop's hardware is broken and it won't turn on. I had some good pictures and important documents that I lost. Is it possible to take the hard drive out and recover them? How would I do this? Or should I take it to someone professional? 10 points for anyone who answers all questions. Thankyou.
Two ways - and you basically hit them both.
But since we don't know what you did to break the computer, we don't know how broken it is - or if the hard drive even works.
If you want to try do it yourself, then you need to know how to open the computer (usually loosen a couple of screws on the bottom then get the keyboard off). Take the bracket off the hard drive, loosen/remove a few more screws and a ribbon cable. Then you need to get an external hard drive case that will fit the drive you just removed. Fry's and NewEgg and LOTS of places carry them. Using another working computer, connect the external drive to the working computer with USB or firewire, start the computer, after you get to a stable desktop, start the external drive. It should mount to the desktop (Macintosh) or be visible under My Computer (Windows).
If it is REALLY broken, then you need the professionals to take the drive apart and extract the data - sector by sector. DriveSavers is one of a few companies that have been doing this successfully for a long time.
In either case, now you understand why making data backups is important. I presume you will start doing that with your next computer.
